Introduction

Ketumati is the wife of Sumali and the mother of Kaikesi, who became the mother of Ravana. She is named in the Uttara Kanda, in its account of the Rakshasa families of Lanka.

Her family

According to the Uttara Kanda, the Gandharva woman Narmada had three daughters, who married the three Rakshasa brothers Malyavan, Sumali and Mali. Ketumati was the wife of Sumali. Their children included a number of sons, among them Prahasta and Akampana, and daughters including Kaikesi.

A note on names

Some accounts describe Sumali's wife as unnamed. The Uttara Kanda gives her name as Ketumati.
