Mali

Malyada

The youngest of the three Rakshasa brothers who ruled Lanka before Ravana, killed by Vishnu.

Accounts of this vary across texts and traditions. This entry primarily follows Valmiki Ramayana, with other tellings (Ramcharitmanas (Tulsidas), Regional and folk traditions) noted where relevant.

Introduction

Mali is the youngest of the three sons of Sukesha, the others being Malyavan and Sumali. According to the Uttara Kanda, the three brothers ruled Lanka before Ravana.

The brothers

The three brothers troubled the gods and sages, who appealed to Vishnu. In the fighting that followed, Mali was killed, and Malyavan and Sumali fled Lanka. Mali's wife, in this account, was Vasuda, another daughter of the Gandharva woman Narmada. His sons later served as ministers of Vibhishana.
