Introduction

Vichitravirya is the younger son of Shantanu and Satyavati. He became king as a boy, and died young without children.

Family

Marriage

Bhishma won the princesses Ambika and Ambalika of Kashi at their swayamvara and brought them to Hastinapura for Vichitravirya. He married them.

Death and succession

Vichitravirya died of an illness soon after, before they had children. Satyavati then asked Vyasa, her son by the sage Parashara, to father children with the widows in the ancient custom of niyoga. This led to the births of Dhritarashtra and Pandu, who were raised as Vichitravirya's legal sons.
