Introduction

Kuru is the son of Samvarana and Tapati. The Kuru dynasty and the field of Kurukshetra, where the great war of the Mahabharata takes place, are named after him.

Family

Kurukshetra

The Adi Parva says that Kuru ploughed the field of Kurukshetra himself, through austerity and effort. The gods granted a boon that those who died there in battle or by fasting would go to heaven.

The dynasty

The kings of Hastinapura are called Kauravas, "descendants of Kuru". Both the Dhritarashtra line and the Pandavas belong to the Kuru dynasty, so the term is used in two senses in the epic: for the whole family, and for Duryodhana's side in the war.
