Introduction

Vasudeva is the son of Shurasena and the father of Krishna, Balarama and Subhadra. He is the brother of Kunti, which makes Krishna the first cousin of the Pandavas.

This article primarily follows the Mahabharata. Where a well-known detail comes from a Puranic or later source, the article identifies it.

His wives included Devaki, the mother of Krishna, and Rohini, the mother of Balarama and Subhadra.

Imprisonment

After a prophecy foretold that Devaki's eighth child would kill her brother Kamsa, Kamsa imprisoned Vasudeva and Devaki. When Krishna was born, Vasudeva carried him across the Yamuna to Gokula, and left him with Nanda and Yashoda. This story is in the Harivamsha and the Puranas.
