Introduction
Balarama is the son of Vasudeva and Rohini and the elder brother of Krishna. He is known for his strength and his weapon, the plough (hala).
This article primarily follows the Mahabharata. Where a well-known detail comes from a Puranic or later source, the article identifies it.
Family
Birth
The seventh child of Devaki was transferred to Rohini's womb before birth, and Balarama was born to her, in the Puranic account.
Neutrality
In the Mahabharata, Balarama did not take part in the war, since he was fond of both Bhima and Duryodhana, both of whom he had taught mace fighting. He went on a pilgrimage during the war, and returned to see the final duel between them. He was angry when Bhima struck Duryodhana below the waist.
The end
Balarama died at Prabhasa after the destruction of the Yadavas. In tradition, he is regarded as the incarnation of Shesha, the serpent.
