Introduction

Gandhari is the daughter of King Subala of Gandhara, the wife of Dhritarashtra and the mother of Duryodhana and his brothers.

This article primarily follows the Mahabharata. Where a well-known detail comes from a Puranic or later source, the article identifies it.

Family

Marriage

She was married to the blind Dhritarashtra. She covered her own eyes with a cloth for the rest of her life, so that she would not experience what her husband could not.

The hundred sons

Gandhari was pregnant for two years and gave birth to a mass of flesh. Vyasa divided it into a hundred and one parts and placed them in pots of ghee, and from them came her hundred sons and a daughter, Dushala.

Curses

After the war, Gandhari cursed Krishna that his clan would be destroyed. She spent her last years in the forest with Dhritarashtra and Kunti, and died with them in a forest fire.
