Introduction

Vishrava is a sage, the son of Pulastya. He is the father of Kubera by Ilavida, and of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, Vibhishana and Shurpanakha by Kaikesi.

This article primarily follows the Valmiki Ramayana. Where a well-known detail comes from a later retelling or tradition, the article identifies it.

Family

Two families

Through his first wife Ilavida, Vishrava was the father of Kubera, who ruled Lanka. Through his second wife, the Rakshasa princess Kaikesi, he was the father of Ravana and his siblings. Kubera and Ravana were therefore half-brothers.
