Introduction

Riksharaja is a Vanara king, and in the Uttara Kanda the father of Vali and Sugriva. According to that account, Vali was born to his wife by the god Indra, and Sugriva by the god Surya.

The story

The Uttara Kanda tells that Riksharaja was transformed into a woman by the effect of a sacred lake. Indra and Surya each fell in love with her, and from these unions came Vali and Sugriva. Riksharaja then returned to male form.
