Aditya · Suryadeva

The sun god, father of Sugriva and ancestor of Rama's dynasty.

Accounts of this vary across texts and traditions. This entry primarily follows Valmiki Ramayana, with other tellings (Ramcharitmanas (Tulsidas), Regional and folk traditions) noted where relevant.

Introduction

Surya is the sun god. He is the ancestor of the solar dynasty, to which Rama belongs, the father of Sugriva and the teacher of Hanuman.

This article primarily follows the Valmiki Ramayana. Where a well-known detail comes from a later retelling or tradition, the article identifies it.

Sugriva

Sugriva is described as a son of Surya.

Hanuman's teacher

According to the Uttara Kanda, Hanuman studied with Surya, following him across the sky as he taught.

The solar dynasty

Rama's family is called the Suryavamsha, "the line of the sun", because Manu, its ancestor, was the son of Surya (Vivasvan). The Aditya Hridayam, the hymn Agastya taught Rama before the last battle, is a hymn to Surya.
