Introduction
Ghatotkacha was the second ruler of the Gupta dynasty, son of Sri Gupta, known almost entirely through his identification as father of Chandragupta I in later Gupta inscriptions.
Family
- Father: Sri Gupta
- Children: Chandragupta I
A Name Shared, Not a Connection
This Ghatotkacha is an entirely unrelated historical Gupta-era king who happens to share his name with the Mahabharata's rakshasa hero Ghatotkacha, son of Bhima and Hidimbi — a coincidence this record notes explicitly rather than implying any connection between the two figures or traditions. Like his father, little independent narrative survives of his reign beyond his place in the dynastic succession.
This article records the Gupta Empire (c. 3rd-6th century CE) as historical genealogy reconstructed mainly from inscriptions, coinage and later literary references; several later successions and family relationships remain genuinely disputed among historians, and this account follows the most widely accepted reconstruction while flagging specific points of uncertainty.
