Introduction
The wife of Kushadhwaja, the younger brother of King Janaka, is the queen of Sankasya and the mother of Mandavi and Shrutakirti, who married Bharata and Shatrughna. Valmiki does not name her individually.
This article primarily follows the Valmiki Ramayana. Where a well-known detail comes from a later retelling or tradition, the article identifies it.
Family
- Husband: Kushadhwaja
- Daughters: Mandavi, Shrutakirti
In Valmiki
The Bala Kanda names Kushadhwaja as ruler of Sankasya and the father of two daughters, but gives no name for his wife. She appears only through her daughters, in the account of the joint wedding of the four princes of Ayodhya at Mithila.
In later tradition
Some later retellings give her a name, most often Kirti or Ratnamala, so that she is not simply "Kushadhwaja's wife". These names are not found in Valmiki and are not consistent across sources.
