Introduction

Vipracitti is a chief among the Danavas, the descendants of Danu, and one of the more prominent Asura leaders named in the epics and Puranas. He is the husband of Simhika and, in some genealogies, the father of the Asura Svarbhanu, whose severed parts become Rahu and Ketu.

Family

In the genealogies

The Mahabharata's Adi Parva lists Vipracitti among the great Danava chiefs descended from Danu and Kashyapa. He and Simhika are named as the parents of Svarbhanu in some Puranic accounts, though other texts give Svarbhanu's parentage differently, and the genealogies of the Danavas vary considerably between sources.

In the war of the gods and demons

Vipracitti appears in several accounts of the wars between the gods and the Asuras as one of the leading commanders on the Asura side, though no single sustained narrative is attached to him individually beyond these genealogical and battle references.
