Introduction

Trijata is a Rakshasi in the Ashoka grove who was kind to Sita. In the Ramayana she is known for her dream of Rama's victory.

This article primarily follows the Valmiki Ramayana. Where a well-known detail comes from a later retelling or tradition, the article identifies it.

Family

The dream

When the Rakshasis threatened Sita, Trijata, who is described as elderly and wise, told them her dream. She had seen Rama and Lakshmana triumphant, and Ravana shaven, smeared with oil and riding south in a chariot drawn by donkeys. She said this meant that Ravana would fall and Sita would be reunited with Rama. She told them to treat Sita gently.

Vibhishana's daughter

In some traditions, Trijata is the daughter of Vibhishana and Sarama, and this is how she is recorded in the family tree. In Valmiki she is described as an elderly Rakshasi and the relationship is not stated.
