Introduction
Sigi was the legendary progenitor of the Volsung line, said in the saga's own account to be a son of Odin — establishing the family's semi-divine descent from the start of the cycle.

Founding a Doomed Line
Little detailed narrative survives of Sigi's own deeds beyond his founding role; his significance lies chiefly in establishing the Volsung dynasty that the saga follows across several generations, through his son Rerir down to Sigmund and Sigurd.
The Volsunga Saga and the Poetic Edda preserve the Norse-Icelandic form of this legend; the German Nibelungenlied recounts substantially the same events under different names (Sigurd as Siegfried, Brynhild as Brünnhilde, Atli as Etzel/Attila), reflecting a shared Germanic legendary tradition rather than a single fixed text.
