Introduction
Rerir was the son of Sigi, continuing the Volsung line into its second generation. The saga records that he and his wife struggled for years with childlessness before finally having a son, Volsung, born after Rerir's own death through divine intervention.

Continuing the Line
Rerir's chief narrative role is genealogical, bridging the saga's legendary founder Sigi and the dynasty's true namesake, Volsung, whose extraordinary and prolonged birth (some versions say his mother carried him for six years, and he was cut from her womb) is treated as a mark of the family's exceptional destiny.
The Volsunga Saga and the Poetic Edda preserve the Norse-Icelandic form of this legend; the German Nibelungenlied recounts substantially the same events under different names (Sigurd as Siegfried, Brynhild as Brünnhilde, Atli as Etzel/Attila), reflecting a shared Germanic legendary tradition rather than a single fixed text.
