Introduction

Mena is the wife of Himavan, the personified Himalaya, and the mother of the goddess Parvati. She is sometimes identified in the Puranas as an incarnation or daughter of the Pitris, the ancestors.

Family

Family

Mena and Himavan's daughter Parvati performed long austerities to win Shiva as a husband, and Mena is shown in the Puranic accounts, including Kalidasa's Kumarasambhava, as an anxious and loving mother, reluctant to see her daughter undertake such hardship. In most accounts, Ganga is also her daughter, born before Parvati.
