Introduction

Giv is the son of Goudarz, one of the most celebrated warriors of the Kayanian era in the Shahnameh, best known for his long and dangerous mission to rescue the young Kay Khosrow and his mother Farangis from Turan.

The rescue mission

At Kay Kavus's command, Giv undertook a difficult and prolonged journey into Turan to find, rescue, and safely escort Kay Khosrow and Farangis back to Iran, a mission complicated by the danger of discovery within Afrasiyab's own kingdom and by the long journey home, pursued by Turanian forces.

A trusted warrior

Beyond this celebrated rescue, Giv appears throughout the Shahnameh's later books as one of the most consistently loyal and capable warriors serving the Kayanian kings, fighting alongside Rostam and other heroes in the ongoing wars against Turan.
