Bhadrakali

A fierce form of the goddess, created alongside Virabhadra from Shiva's fury at Sati's death, who took part in the destruction of Daksha's sacrifice.

Accounts of this vary across texts and traditions. This entry primarily follows Puranic tradition, with other tellings (Vedic tradition (Rigveda), Regional and sectarian traditions) noted where relevant.

Introduction

Bhadrakali, "auspicious Kali", is a fierce goddess, in the Puranic story of Daksha's sacrifice created alongside Virabhadra out of Shiva's anger and grief at Sati's death.

Origin and role

Accounts differ on her exact origin: some Puranas describe her as arising alongside Virabhadra from Shiva's hair or fury, in a parallel act of creation, while others identify her with Kali or Parvati's own fierce aspect summoned for the occasion. She joined Virabhadra and the Ganas in overturning Daksha's sacrifice.

Worship

Bhadrakali is worshipped widely as an independent goddess in Kerala and parts of South India, with numerous temples dedicated to her, particularly associated with protective and fierce forms of devotion, somewhat independently of the specific Daksha episode from which her name in this genealogical context derives.
