Bhadra

A courtier who reported to Rama the public rumours about Sita.

Accounts of this vary across texts and traditions. This entry primarily follows Valmiki Ramayana, with other tellings (Ramcharitmanas (Tulsidas), Regional and folk traditions) noted where relevant.

Introduction

Bhadra is a courtier and companion of Rama who, in the Uttara Kanda, tells Rama what the people of Ayodhya are saying about Sita.

The rumours

Rama asked his companions what the people said about him. Bhadra hesitated, and then told him that the citizens were talking about Sita's time in Lanka. This report was what led Rama to send Sita into exile.
