From Ogdoad to Eclipse
As Amun grew from one of the eight Hermopolitan primordial gods into the supreme state god of the New Kingdom at Thebes, his cultic wife-role was increasingly filled by Mut rather than Amaunet, though Amaunet retained ritual importance in some contexts, including a role in royal coronation rites at Karnak and Luxor.
Ancient Egyptian religion spanned three millennia and many regional cult centers, so parentage, roles and even gender pairings for a given deity often differ between the Heliopolitan, Hermopolitan, Memphite and Theban theological systems; the account above follows the most widely attested classical version.
