The End of an Era

By Vishnugupta's time, Gupta central authority had greatly diminished from its earlier imperial extent, with power increasingly devolved to regional successor states and the empire's core territory much reduced. His reign marks, for most historians, close to the effective end of the Gupta imperial line as a major political power, even though scattered later claims to Gupta descent or titulature would continue to appear in some regional contexts afterward.

This article records the Gupta Empire (c. 3rd-6th century CE) as historical genealogy reconstructed mainly from inscriptions, coinage and later literary references; several later successions and family relationships remain genuinely disputed among historians, and this account follows the most widely accepted reconstruction while flagging specific points of uncertainty.
