Sumantra

The charioteer and chief minister of Dasharatha.

Accounts of this vary across texts and traditions. This entry primarily follows Valmiki Ramayana, with other tellings (Ramcharitmanas (Tulsidas), Regional and folk traditions) noted where relevant.

Introduction

Sumantra is the charioteer and trusted minister of King Dasharatha. He appears in several important scenes in the Bala and Ayodhya Kandas.

Advising the king

It was Sumantra who told Dasharatha about the sage Rishyasringa and the sacrifice that could bring him sons.

The road to exile

When Rama, Sita and Lakshmana left Ayodhya, Sumantra drove their chariot to the edge of the forest at the river Ganga, and then returned to Ayodhya alone, with a heavy heart. He was with Dasharatha in his last days.
