Sudarshana Chakra

Sudarshana

The discus of Vishnu, regarded in tradition as manifest in Bharata.

Accounts of this vary across texts and traditions. This entry primarily follows Puranic tradition, with other tellings (Valmiki Ramayana) noted where relevant.

Introduction

The Sudarshana Chakra is the divine discus that Vishnu carries. In some traditions, Bharata is regarded as a manifestation of it.

In tradition

Among the four brothers, tradition identifies Rama with Vishnu, Lakshmana with Shesha, Bharata with the Sudarshana Chakra, and Shatrughna with the conch Panchajanya. This is a theological interpretation and not a statement in Valmiki.
