Introduction

Siyamak is a son of Keyumars, the first king of the Shahnameh's legendary history. His death, before he could succeed his father, is one of the epic's earliest episodes of the cosmic struggle between Ahura Mazda's creation and the forces of Angra Mainyu.

Family

Death at the hands of the Black Div

Angra Mainyu, seeking to destroy Keyumars's line and the emerging order of human kingship, sent his own son, known as the Black Div, to kill Siyamak. Ferdowsi describes Keyumars's grief at his son's death as profound, and the loss sets the stage for the continued struggle between good and evil that will run throughout the Shahnameh.

Succession

Despite Siyamak's death, his own son Hushang survives to eventually succeed his grandfather Keyumars as king, avenging his father's death and continuing the royal line.
