Introduction

Reuel is a son of Esau and his wife Basemath (identified in Genesis 36 as Ishmael's daughter), named among the chiefs of the Edomite genealogy given in that chapter.

Note: this Reuel, son of Esau, is a different figure from Reuel the Midianite priest, father-in-law of Moses in the book of Exodus (also called Jethro in some passages); the two share a name but are not identified with one another in the biblical text.

Family

In the Edomite genealogy

Genesis 36:4, 13 and 17 record Reuel as Esau's son by Basemath, and list his own sons, Nahath, Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah, as further Edomite chiefs, continuing the chapter's detailed record of Esau's descendants and their status as tribal leaders in the land of Edom.
