Historical Notes

Note: Following the end of centralized Kulasekhara rule (accounts vary on the exact date and immediate cause, generally placed in the early-to-mid 12th century CE), Kerala fragmented into a number of smaller independent chiefdoms and kingdoms rather than passing to a single successor state — a genuinely different pattern from the Chola-to-Pandya succession recorded in the neighboring Medieval Chola & Pandya Empires project.

This article records a figure from the medieval Kulasekhara (second Chera) dynasty of Mahodayapuram, Kerala, and its successor swaroopams. The dynasty's genealogy is reconstructed chiefly from temple and copper-plate inscriptions rather than a continuous chronicle, and its later kings and the founders of the post-fragmentation successor states are less firmly attested than its earlier phase, as noted in the individual entries.
