A Contested Succession
The exact sequence and relationships of Gupta rulers after Skandagupta are not fully agreed upon by historians, with inscriptional evidence for this period both sparser and more difficult to reconcile than for the dynasty's earlier, stronger reigns. Purugupta's own reign, if it occurred as a separate ruling period, appears to have been part of this general pattern of contested or overlapping succession as central Gupta authority began to weaken.
This article records the Gupta Empire (c. 3rd-6th century CE) as historical genealogy reconstructed mainly from inscriptions, coinage and later literary references; several later successions and family relationships remain genuinely disputed among historians, and this account follows the most widely accepted reconstruction while flagging specific points of uncertainty.
