Introduction

Prasuti is the wife of the Prajapati Daksha, and, in the Puranic genealogies, a daughter of the first Manu, Svayambhuva, and his wife Shatarupa. She is the mother of Sati, Shiva's first wife, among Daksha's many daughters.

Family

According to the Vishnu and Bhagavata Puranas, Prasuti and her sister Akuti were the daughters of Svayambhuva Manu. Prasuti married Daksha, and bore him a very large number of daughters, whom Daksha gave in marriage to Kashyapa, Dharma, Chandra and other gods and sages, and one, Sati, to Shiva.

At Daksha's sacrifice

Prasuti is present, though a less prominent figure than Daksha himself, in the story of Daksha's great sacrifice, at which Sati, insulted on her husband's behalf, gave up her life; Prasuti's grief at her daughter's death is noted in some versions of the story.
