Introduction

Pourushaspa is the father of Zarathustra, named in Zoroastrian tradition and later Pahlavi texts as part of the prophet's ancestry, belonging to the Spitama clan.

Family

A minor genealogical figure

Pourushaspa receives little independent narrative in the surviving Avestan material beyond his role as Zarathustra's father; later Zoroastrian tradition, particularly in Pahlavi and New Persian sources such as the Zartosht-nama, elaborates his story further with miraculous elements surrounding Zarathustra's conception and birth, though these later legendary accretions are not part of the earliest Gathic material.
