The Fragrant Lotus God

Nefertum is closely tied to the lotus's symbolic association with the sun's daily rebirth, since the flower closes at night and reopens at dawn; some cosmogonic traditions describe the sun god himself emerging from a primeval lotus, a role Nefertum's own iconography — often shown wearing or embodying a lotus headdress — directly evokes.

Ancient Egyptian religion spanned three millennia and many regional cult centers, so parentage, roles and even gender pairings for a given deity often differ between the Heliopolitan, Hermopolitan, Memphite and Theban theological systems; the account above follows the most widely attested classical version.
