Masattuvan

A phenomenally wealthy merchant prince of Puhar (Kaveripoompattinam); father of Kovalan in the Silappatikaram

Introduction

A phenomenally wealthy merchant prince of Puhar (Kaveripoompattinam); father of Kovalan in the Silappatikaram

Family

  • Children: Kovalan

Textual Notes

Note: An earlier version of this record incorrectly identified Masattuvan as the person who sheltered Kovalan and Kannagi at Madurai. That role belongs to Madari, a cowherd woman of Madurai's outskirts (now added separately). Kosigan, also previously misdescribed as Masattuvan's wife, is a Brahmin messenger from Puhar in the text, not a spouse of anyone recorded here.

This article records a figure from Sangam-era and early medieval Tamil literature and dynastic tradition — the Chera, Chola, Pandya and Pallava royal lines, the legendary Kadai Ezhu Vallalgal patrons, and the Silappatikaram/Manimekalai epic cycle. Chronology and genealogy in this corpus are drawn from praise-poetry and literary narrative rather than administrative record, and are recorded here as attested textual tradition rather than settled history; the Pallava kings in particular postdate the classical Sangam corpus by several centuries, as noted in their individual entries.
