Introduction

Makaradhwaja is a figure from later regional Ramayana traditions, described as a son of Hanuman. He does not appear in Valmiki's Ramayana.

This article follows later traditions, where Makaradhwaja is the son of Hanuman.

Family

The story

In the Krittibas Ramayana and related traditions, a drop of Hanuman's sweat fell into the sea, was swallowed by a fish, and produced a son. When Hanuman went to Patala to rescue Rama and Lakshmana from Ahiravana, he was stopped at the gate by Makaradhwaja, who was guarding it. They fought, and then recognised each other as father and son. Hanuman made him king of Patala.
