Convener of the First Council

Mahakassapa presided over the First Buddhist Council at Rajagaha, convened shortly after the Buddha's parinirvana specifically to formally recite and compile the teachings before they could be lost or distorted through oral transmission. He is credited with organizing the council's structure, in which Ananda recited the Suttas and Upali recited the Vinaya (monastic discipline), a process traditionally regarded as establishing the core of the Pali Canon.

This article follows the Pali Canon and its commentarial tradition as the primary early Buddhist textual source; where sources genuinely disagree on a detail (such as an exact parentage), that disagreement is noted rather than resolved into a single invented certainty.
