A Deified Ancestor
Separate Sumerian epic poems (Lugalbanda in the Mountain Cave and Lugalbanda and the Anzu Bird) recount his own earlier heroic adventures, including surviving abandonment in the wilderness and gaining supernatural speed as a gift from the monstrous Anzu bird — stories that, like Gilgamesh's own later epic, blend historical kingship with legendary and divine embellishment typical of the Sumerian king-list tradition.
Mesopotamian religion spans Sumerian, Akkadian, and Babylonian sources composed and recopied across nearly three thousand years, so names, genealogies, and even a deity's role often shift between traditions (Sumerian An/Enki/Inanna alongside their Akkadian/Babylonian forms Anu/Ea/Ishtar); the account above follows the most widely attested version, usually as consolidated in the Babylonian Enuma Elish or the standard Akkadian Epic of Gilgamesh.
