Introduction

Lakshmi, also called Shri, is the goddess of fortune and prosperity, and the consort of Vishnu. In later tradition, Sita is regarded as her incarnation.

Family

In the tradition

Because Rama is regarded as an avatar of Vishnu, Sita is traditionally understood to be an avatar of Lakshmi. This identification is common in devotional literature but is not a statement in Valmiki's core narrative.
