Introduction

Haran is a son of Terah and brother of Abraham and Nahor, notable for dying relatively young, before his father Terah, in his native city of Ur of the Chaldeans. His son Lot, taken along by Terah's family when they left Ur, becomes a significant figure in Abraham's own story, and his daughter Milcah marries her uncle Nahor.

Note: this Haran, son of Terah, should not be confused with the city of Haran in Mesopotamia, where Terah's family later settled; the two share a name (in the Hebrew text they are actually spelled with different initial consonants, though this distinction is often lost in English transliteration) but are unrelated.

Family

Early death

Genesis 11:28 records that Haran died in the presence of his father Terah, in Ur of the Chaldeans, before the family's later journey toward Canaan, making him the only one of Terah's three sons who did not survive to make that journey.

Children

Haran's children are Lot, who accompanies Abraham to Canaan and becomes a significant figure in his own right, and two daughters, Milcah, who marries her uncle Nahor, and Iscah, about whom the text gives no further information.
