Guha

The king of the Nishadas, a friend of Rama who ferried him across the Ganga.

Accounts of this vary across texts and traditions. This entry primarily follows Valmiki Ramayana, with other tellings (Ramcharitmanas (Tulsidas), Regional and folk traditions) noted where relevant.

Introduction

Guha is the king of the Nishadas, a forest people, who ruled the town of Shringaverapura on the bank of the Ganga. He is Rama's friend and helped him at the start of his exile.

This article primarily follows the Valmiki Ramayana. Where a well-known detail comes from a later retelling or tradition, the article identifies it.

Welcoming Rama

When Rama, Sita and Lakshmana reached the Ganga, Guha welcomed them with food and shelter. Rama refused the food and accepted only simple hospitality, as an ascetic. Guha told Rama that Lakshmana had stayed awake all night to guard them.

Crossing the river

Guha arranged the boats that took them across the Ganga. When Bharata arrived later, Guha at first suspected that he was coming to attack, but after seeing his sorrow he helped him too.

Character

Guha's friendship with Rama is often cited as an example of the epic's regard for people outside the royal court.
