Introduction

Gridr is a giantess, one of Odin's several consorts, and, by him, the mother of Vidar, the god fated to avenge his father's death at Ragnarok.

Family

Family and role

Gridr's chief significance in the surviving sources is as Vidar's mother. In a separate myth recorded by Snorri Sturluson, a giantess named Gridr assists the god Thor with protective gifts, a staff, an iron glove and a belt of strength, during his journey to the hall of the giant Geirröd; whether this Gridr is the same figure as Vidar's mother is not made explicit in the sources, though the shared name suggests a likely connection.
