Introduction
The elder daughter of Lot, unnamed in the biblical text, is, with her sister, one of two daughters who fled Sodom's destruction with Lot. Believing no other men remained to continue the family line, she initiated relations with her intoxicated father, bearing a son, Moab, identified in the text as the ancestor of the Moabites.
Family
After Sodom
Following the destruction of Sodom and the loss of their mother, who was turned into a pillar of salt for looking back at the city, Lot's elder daughter proposed to her sister that they make their father drink wine and lie with him, "so that we may preserve offspring through our father", reasoning, according to the text, that there was no other man in the region to give them children in the ordinary way.
Moab
The son born from this union, Moab, is explicitly named in Genesis 19:37 as "the ancestor of the Moabites of today," connecting this episode directly to the origin of a people who appear throughout the rest of the Hebrew Bible, generally in a position of tension or hostility with Israel.
