Eitri (Sindri)

Sindri

A dwarf smith who, with his brother Brokkr, forged Mjolnir and other treasures of the gods in a legendary smithing contest.

Accounts of this vary across texts and traditions. This entry primarily follows Norse mythology (Eddic tradition), with other tellings (Prose Edda (Snorri Sturluson), Poetic Edda (anonymous Icelandic poems), Regional Scandinavian and Germanic folk tradition) noted where relevant.

Introduction

Eitri, also called Sindri in some sources, is a dwarf craftsman who, working the forge while his brother Brokkr worked the bellows, created Thor's hammer Mjolnir and other treasures of the gods in a famous contest of skill.

Forging the treasures

Eitri's skill at the forge produced three legendary items in the contest against the sons of Ivaldi: Draupnir, Odin's self-multiplying gold ring; Gullinbursti, Freyr's golden boar; and Mjolnir, Thor's hammer, whose handle was left shorter than intended only because Loki, disguised as a fly, bit Brokkr and made him pause the bellows at a crucial moment during Eitri's work.

Legacy

Despite this single flaw, Mjolnir was judged the greatest of all six treasures shown to the gods that day, securing victory in the wager for Eitri and Brokkr and cementing Eitri's reputation as one of the most skilled craftsmen among the dwarves of Norse myth.
