Introduction

Cush is a son of Ham, named first among Ham's four sons in the Table of Nations of Genesis 10:6-8, and the father of Nimrod, the "mighty warrior" and kingdom-builder given unusually extensive individual attention in the same chapter. Cush's descendants are generally associated by scholars with regions of Africa and Arabia, most prominently ancient Nubia (the region south of Egypt, in modern Sudan), though the name is also applied elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible to other locations.

Family

Descendants

Genesis 10:7 lists several of Cush's sons, including Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah and Sabtechah, and Raamah's own sons Sheba and Dedan, names generally associated with regions of the Arabian peninsula and the Horn of Africa in scholarly identification, alongside his most individually notable son, Nimrod.

Father of Nimrod

Cush's fatherhood of Nimrod, "the first on earth to become a mighty warrior" and founder of a Mesopotamian kingdom, connects Cush's line to one of the few figures in the Table of Nations given a developed individual narrative rather than a bare genealogical listing.
