Survivor and Founder
Aeneas was one of the few major Trojan figures to escape the city's fall, carrying his aged father Anchises from the burning ruins and leading a band of survivors on a long sea journey. Virgil's Aeneid, composed centuries later in Rome, expanded this journey into the legendary founding narrative of the Roman people, tracing Rome's ancestry back to Troy through Aeneas's eventual settlement in Italy.
As with all figures of Greek heroic legend, sources diverge on many particulars; the account above follows the most widely transmitted classical tradition.
