Introduction
Adah is a wife of Esau, mother of his son Eliphaz. Genesis's genealogical lists give somewhat varying descriptions of the identity and number of Esau's wives between Genesis 26, 28 and 36, a discrepancy long noted by scholars and commentators; in Genesis 36, Adah is called "daughter of Elon the Hittite".
Note: this Adah is a different figure from the earlier Adah who is a wife of Lamech in the line of Cain; the two share a name but are unrelated in the text.
Family
Marriage and son
Genesis 36:2 and following list Adah among Esau's wives and name their son as Eliphaz, who becomes, in the same chapter's genealogy, the father of several Edomite chiefs, including Amalek.
Variant accounts of Esau's wives
Genesis 26:34 and 28:9 give a somewhat different set of names and identifications for Esau's wives than the list in Genesis 36, a variation scholars generally attribute to the combination of different underlying source traditions within the formation of the biblical text, rather than to a change of wives within the narrative itself.
